Antioxidants & Polyphenols in Tea: What Do They Actually Mean?
Tea gets described as “healthy” all the time.
You have probably heard the words antioxidants, polyphenols, catechins, and maybe even EGCG thrown around somewhere between the tea aisle and your Instagram feed.
It all sounds impressive. It can also sound like you need a chemistry degree just to enjoy a cup of green tea. You don’t.
So, what is actually in your tea—and why has something people have been drinking for thousands of years become such a big part of the modern wellness conversation?
Let’s make it simple.
First: What Exactly Is an Antioxidant?
Your body is constantly dealing with normal wear and tear.
As part of everyday life, our bodies produce unstable molecules commonly called free radicals. They can also be generated through things we encounter every day, including pollution, sunlight, and normal metabolic processes.
Antioxidants are compounds that help your body manage some of this oxidative activity.
Think of them less as a magical shield and more as part of your body's very large maintenance crew.
Tea happens to contain plant compounds that can act as antioxidants—which brings us to the next word you have probably heard.
Polyphenols.
Polyphenols: The Plant Part of the Story
Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds found in plants. They're present in foods and drinks you probably already consume—fruits, vegetables, cocoa, coffee, and, yes, tea.
In tea, polyphenols contribute to much more than its wellness reputation. They also help create the flavor, aroma, color, and even that slightly dry sensation you sometimes notice after a sip. In other words, some of what makes tea tea comes down to these compounds.
Traditional teas such as green, black, white, and oolong all come from the same plant: Camellia sinensis. What changes is how the leaves are processed after they're picked. And that is where things get interesting.
Green, Black & Oolong: Same Plant, Different Personality
Think of them as siblings. Same family. Very different personalities.
Green Tea
Green tea leaves undergo relatively little oxidation during processing.
As a result, green tea is particularly well known for a group of polyphenols called catechins. One you may have seen before is EGCG—short for epigallocatechin gallate.

Black Tea

And then there is oolong. Oolong lives somewhere between green and black tea in terms of oxidation, which helps give it its famously complex character. It can be floral, fruity, nutty, roasted, or remarkably delicate depending on how it is made.
