Tea Recipe: Rock & Rye Punch

Lately I’ve become obsessed with an old cordial known as Rock & Rye.  It has started making a comeback, appearing on store shelves more frequently than in years past.

My first experience with this little known beverage was with my Irish grandmother, who would always tell my mom to give it to us kids whenever we had a cough (although I don’t think she ever actually gave it to us).  After a bit of research, this was actually a fairly common practice – to skirt the oppressive taxes brought about from Prohibition, many Rock & Rye producers started marketing it as medicine rather than a beverage!

Rock & Rye is great by itself, but even better with a little bit of tea.  Here’s a great way to dip your foot in the Rock & Rye pool:

2 oz. Crimson Punch, chilled
1 1⁄2 oz. Rock & Rye (recommeded: Hochstadter’s Slow and Low Rock & Rye)
1⁄2 oz. aged rum (recommended: Pyrat XO Rum)
1⁄2 oz. fresh lime juice
1 slice orange, garnish
1 brandied cherry, garnish

Stir together tea, Rock & Rye, rum, and juice in an old-fashioned glass. Add ice, and garnish with orange slice and brandied cherry.
