Thanks to what appears to have been some over-zealous newscasters (who should probably switch to herbal tea), much of the East Coast has beared down for a rather nasty storm named Earl today.
However, looking out at the clear, sunny skies in NYC this afternoon, it appears that Earl was a bit of a dud.
So to celebrate the lack of destruction, I thought it would be the perfect time to concoct a new tea cocktail!
Today’s intoxicating treat is a spin on the classic New Orleans cocktail named, appropriately enough, the Hurricane. I’ve infused it with a special tea that fits in honor of the day’s events.
So without further adieu, I give you the Hurricane Earl – but be careful this one really does pack a punch!
2 oz light rum
2 oz dark rum
2 oz passion fruit juice
1 oz orange juice
1 meyer lemon
1 Tbsp Earl Grey syrup (recipe follows)
1 Tbsp grenadine
Squeeze juice from half the into shaker over ice, then pour the remaining ingredients into the cocktail shaker.
Shake well (for at least 15 seconds, to fully incorporate), and strain into your favorite (hurricane-ready) cocktail glass.
earl grey syrup
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons Earl Grey Reserve, dry
Combine both water and sugar in a pot and bring to a boil. Allow to boil for 5 minutes to fully incorporate, then take off heat and add tea leaves, steeping for 15 minutes. Strain and cool completely.
