Move Over Matcha, There’s a New Trend for 2017

2016 was a very good year for Matcha.

It went from a virtually unknown ingredient in your green tea latte to a veritable household name, found in everything from cookies to popcorn to cocktails and beyond.  Even Matcha Cafes have been popping up in the past couple months!

But according to chic magazine Vogue, there’s a new tea trend in town, and it will give Matcha a run for its crown.

Yes, they predict that the new drink of 2017 will be (drumroll, please!)…

Yerba Mate.

I can see why they’d say that – not only does Mate have a deep cultural past (which can be traced all the way back to pre-Columbus Paraguay) but it also boasts many health benefits (it is chock-full of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, phosphorus, and zinc) and, unlike other herbal teas, it actually packs a wallop of caffeine.

Will this trend actually take off?  Maybe so, maybe not.  But if you were to ask me two years ago if folks would be clamoring over getting that last Matcha Croissant at the hip bakery out in Brooklyn, I’d probably say “no way.”

Me?  I’ll take both (and then some!):  A nice Matcha Latte in the morning, cold brewed Yerba Mate at lunch, and end the day with a nice cup of Serenity – let’s bookmark that one for 2018!
