Today is Mardi Gras, the day known as Fat Tuesday – the last hurrah before the Catholic season of Lent begins (tomorrow, Ash Wednesday).
So I thought to myself, what better day to tinker around with an old favorite? So I went through the notes from my cocktail creations folder and took a fresh new look at one recipe in particular: the Hurricane Earl.
The Hurricane is the quintessential New Orleans cocktail, and this updated, tea-infused version is sure to bring at least one or two hurrahs into your Mardi Gras party!
2 oz light rum (recommended: Crusoe Silver)
1 oz dark rum
2 oz passionfruit juice
1 oz orange juice
juice of half a meyer lemon
1 Tbsp Earl Grey syrup (recipe follows)
splash of lemon-lime soda
Squeeze juice from half the lemon into shaker over ice, then pour the remaining ingredients (except soda) into the cocktail shaker.
Shake well (for at least 15 seconds, to fully incorporate), and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with lemon-lime soda.
earl grey syrup
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons Earl Grey Reserve, dry
Combine both water and sugar in a pot and bring to a boil. Allow to boil for 5 minutes to fully incorporate, then take off heat and add tea leaves, steeping for 15 minutes. Strain and cool completely.
